A Different Start To The Year

31/1/2021

It hasn't been the start to the year we would have wanted with The Gallery and Courtyard currently closed as we navigate our way through another National Lockdown. The businesses which make up our community at OBY are keeping positive and continuing to trade by offering a variety of online shopping options, click and collect services and even local delivery where possible. We've got a dedicated coronavirus update page where you can find out more details about each of our traders offerings and links to their virtual shops. As we are able to start thinking about reopening fully in the coming weeks (hopefully) this will be where you can find any additional information needed to plan your visit.

National Story Telling Week

Saturday 30th January saw the start of National Story Telling Week so we thought it would be a great opportunity to remind you about The Story of Old Bolsover Yard, our National Lottery Heritage Fund Project which is running until March 2021

We have now completed a Historic Buildings Record of the site. The plot of land containing the site of Old Bolsover Yard has most likely supported a building facing onto Castle Street from the late medieval/early post-medieval period as alluded to by historic mapping dating from the 17th century. The basement underneath the north western half of No.2 Castle Street, thought to have been the butcher’s shop, contains some substantial remains of salting slabs and other storage features.
These were common in contemporary houses dating right back to the 17th century; however, ones of this size in such a small house seem unlikely, suggesting that this house was once a butcher’s shop.

We're starting to put together a picture of the people who have lived and worked at 2 Castle Street and are working with a small project team to write up The Story of Old Bolsover Yard. Throughout National Storytelling week we will be sharing some of the details from both the report and our research across our social media channels. Keep a look out for our Story Writing challenge too so you can get involved.
